Comprehensive chest CT by AI: The Early Detection Solution of Cardiovascular Lesion

In a groundbreaking development, researchers from Harvard Medical School have unveiled a revolutionary AI in healthcare capable of patient's risk early detection in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) through the analysis of a single chest CT image. While traditional methods utilize a patient's coronary artery calcium score (CAC) from cardiac CT exams, this innovative approach, named CT-CV-Risk, explores the untapped potential of chest CT studies for comprehensive risk assessment.

Exploring the Potential of Chest CT Studies:

Lead presenter Vineet Kalathur Raghu, PhD, and his team embarked on this exploration, leveraging the National Lung Screening Trial's chest CT exams to train CT-CV-Risk. The primary objective was to predict a patient's probability of cardiovascular mortality within a 12-year timeframe.

Testing the algorithm on a hold-out set of 7,405 individuals without a history of type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, or stroke revealed promising results. CT-CV-Risk demonstrated a statistically significant improvement over a baseline regression model for predicting cardiovascular mortality. Impressively, it also exhibited similar accuracy in predicting fatal myocardial infarctions and strokes. Moreover, the algorithm surpassed the capabilities of traditional methods by predicting cardiovascular mortality beyond the coronary artery calcium score and baseline risk factors.
