In a groundbreaking study published on December 12 in Radiology, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the interpretation of chest X-rays has demonstrated a remarkable impact on detecting thoracic abnormalities. Conducted by Gleamer consultants and clinicians at Cochin Hospital in Paris, this study brings to light the transformative potential of AI in improving diagnostic accuracy across radiologists of varying expertise levels.
The study, employing the innovative ChestView algorithm (v. 1.2.0, Gleamer), showcased a substantial increase in sensitivity for detecting abnormalities in chest X-rays. Regardless of the reader's expertise level or the specific abnormality being examined, AI assistance proved to enhance sensitivity without compromising specificity. Dr. Souhail Bennani and colleagues emphasized the potential of AI to revolutionize chest radiograph interpretation.
Chest X-rays, the most common radiologic examination globally, pose challenges in interpretation. The study specifically delved into the potential benefits of AI assistance in detecting five thoracic abnormalities. A dataset of 500 images from patients undergoing chest X-rays and thoracic CT between 2010 and 2020 served as the basis for the research. A senior thoracic radiologist meticulously annotated images, utilizing CT results as the ground truth.
Involving a diverse group of 12 readers, including thoracic radiologists, general radiologists, and radiology residents, the study revealed transformative outcomes with AI assistance. Readers detected lung masses, nodules, and small pneumothoraxes more effectively with AI. Additionally, AI significantly reduced the mean reading time, marking a 31% decrease from 81 seconds without AI to 56 seconds with AI.
